Many might be wondering why they should vote for Paul Schrader. Well lets look at some of what I believe to be common sense issues. NO masters degree needed.
This is nothing personal against Mark Averbeck. I admire his fortitude and no-nonsense approach to the Captain Gray scandal in the last week. Some think that Averbeck’s approach is nothing more than political grandstanding. Maybe. Or maybe Mark is just tired of what he has seen in his career. I will give him the benefit of the doubt.
Those long-time members of the Sheriff’s Department who have seen the same old way of doing business with the last three or four Sheriffs should be dying to vote come June 8. Why would the last few Sheriffs, who are different in personality and education, still be conducting themselves as if they have been cloned before being appointed?
For at least the last 20 years the promotional system has been the same. Five groups with employees seeking promotion. Some employees in Group 1 for years being passed over. Employees in Groups 3 and 4 being promoted over the folks in Group 1. How does that make any sense?
Those employees in Group 1 may learn at some point that a particular deputy chief does not like them and that is why they have not been promoted. Maybe when the chief retires, bingo you’re promoted. This has gone on for years with some of you. Walking on egg shells, careful in what you say, even setting aside your values just to keep your chances alive for a future promotion. Seems quite stressful to me.
Some of those folks in the group below you were someone’s relative or pal who gets the stripes. Worse part that person is without question less qualified than you. Scary is they don’t really have ANY patrol experience, investigative experience or life experience. NOW they might be your supervisor and will be telling you how to do your job.
Do you really want someone who has spent their entire career in a particular division now coming to patrol or where you have been for many years, and all of a sudden they tell you, YOU don’t know what your doing?
With this lack of experience they might not be able to make command decisions in critical incidents and things go bad. Now you have to suck it up while things get covered up or changed to keep this person LOOKING good in the big picture, only because that person is the Sheriff’s favorite employee. Especially if they are a female in some cases.
Paul Schrader’s approach. Numbers 1-100. You’re number 5, there are 10 positions coming open, bingo you know your getting promoted. WHAT is there not to like about all that? It damn sure is a very fair approach.
There are countless stories on this blog and many more that have not been talked about involving the disciplinary process. You get into trouble and get 30 days off, but someone else gets 5 days off for doing the same thing.
Besides the 30 days off, you get transferred out of your present assignment, and the guy who got 5 days off gets promoted, or gets a better assignment shortly after that. We have all seen that time and time again.
Worse yet you paid your dues, sucked up your discipline, didn’t fight the case in civil service. It has been 5 years since you got into trouble, you have been in Group 1 for promotion the last 3 years and have been passed over. You finally find out from a source your not getting promoted because of what you did 5 years before.
But the other guy who got 5 days off is now two ranks above you and is still as lazy as the day you met him. If none of you have a problem with that, you really are naive.
But the worse part about all that, you want to go see the Sheriff and ask him about that. You can’t because if you have to point out a serious flaw in the system and make someone in power look bad, you will continue to suffer for that.
You can’t go to SEBA for help because the Union President is not going to rock the boat and upset the Sheriff. So you continue to walk on egg shells, keep quiet and hope you will be noticed someday by someone in the system who believes in fairness.
Does not sound like a progressive leadership to me for the last 20 years. How many times have you been told, YOU need to change YOUR way of conducting business? What is that analogy, “do as I say, not as I do”?
Now I will submit to you the only one who will argue that are the ones who have progressed in the system or have a present agenda they don’t want disturbed. But they sure as hell don’t care about you. YES it is about me, not you.
But the ones who do care, won’t say anything because they don’t want to suffer the wrath. YES the various supervisor who you look up to are also afraid of retaliation. IS THIS RUSSIA or what?
Would it not have been cool, if Sheriff Penrod had looked at the still photos from the Ivory Webb shooting and saw the airman reaching up into his coat at the time Ivory shot Carrion, showed those to the public in a news conference and stood by Ivory, instead of throwing him under the bus and treating him the way the Department did?
If the public wants to recall the Sheriff because they feel he is not going to jump to their demands, THEN recall the Sheriff.
When was the last time you saw our Sheriff standing before the press and taking a position contrary to public opinion and telling the world I support the actions of my personnel based on the evidence in this case? Have a great day to those who have no idea what they are talking about.
Am I going to fire one of my people just because the Reverend Al Sharpton is jumping up and down. NO!! Bring it on for those civic leaders who are threatening the BOS by telling them they won’t get their campaign contributions this year.
There is also NO QUESTION that retaliation on a number of fronts are alive and well within this County and the Sheriff’s Department. Employees and I am sure more that a few citizens are GRIPPED in fear of saying anything, no matter what the issue. WHY is that?
Good leadership DOES NOT promote or allow the level of fear that we now see in this County and among its employees and citizens. ARE all these people paranoid for no reason?
For those elitist who think a master’s degree makes someone a leader and say that Schrader cannot run this Department because he doesn’t have paper on his wall, WELL either did Penrod and a few of you thought he was the best.
Anyone EVEN considered the political good old boy ties that will be severed the minute Schrader is sworn into office? REALLY think about it. BOOM gone at the stroke of a pen.
All these rich people and politicians who call Hoops up wanting something ARE OVER. Ramos won’t be able to call Schrader up and call in a favor that might be detrimental to your or a citizens health.
The Board of Supervisor won’t be getting special favors either. YES a working relationship is needed, BUT not one that lacks transparency either.
NO MORE past Deputy Chiefs or Executive Staff members calling the Sheriff for favors and getting them, especially if they lack transparency.
NO MORE the Mayor of a City calling in on you, and for political reasons you are on the misery program.
NO MORE change this police report, fix this ticket, take this person home, arrest this person because I don’t like him.
No MORE feeling you can’t speak up about a problem and be retaliated against.
For those who say THIS is not going to happen overnight, I would agree to a certain extent. Some things will have to be looked at like anything else.
But one thing that will happen for many employees and citizens is a sense of relief that many of these problems will no longer be around in short order.
I think SEBA will no longer need to ask it members to pay the high dues they are. Why, they won’t be spending the hundreds of thousands of dollars on fighting disciplines and terminations we now see, looking for ways to dance around the primary issues of bad management practices in the disciplinary process.
Their lawyers will not longer need to convince you to accept a bad or unfair discipline to cover up the misdeeds of management.
Have any of you thought about how many of those supervisors you have never liked, that will retire immediately upon Schrader being elected? There will be a few right out of the gate, because they won’t work for an outsider who is going to change some very obvious ways of doing business. Well I say BYE BYE to those who will.
Is this approach going to cost the taxpayer millions of dollars to get rid of corruption from the stroke of a pen by changing practices of the past? I don’t see how.
HOW does telling managers they will NO LONGER do a certain act that has caused nothing but problems for everyone going to cost the taxpayers money?
How many times have you heard a supervisor or Executive Staff member say, “just do it.” It’s done. I think that “just do it,” will be used for far better reason than we have seen.
Not only will these changes bring morale to an all time high, it will make the work force more productive. WE might just see sick time, medical leaves, go way down. I think that is a cost savings.
I would not vote for anyone who won’t publicly support H&S 11362.5. Don’t legitimize candidates who ignore the law, and who think it is OK to make law abiding citizens into criminals “for their own good.”
VOTING FOR THE LESSER OF TWO EVILS IS VOTING FOR EVIL!
For those ethics minded individuals, think about this.
Do ANY of you see anything wrong with your boss getting orally copulated in a city/county owned vehicle during a public function?
Then going to work the next morning, sitting on a Board of Chiefs hearing and firing an employee who got orally compulated while on the job? Or severly disciplined? And only because the local Mayor caught the Deputy.
Then the boss walks out his office door, gets into his car, goes to the golf course and plays 9 holes of golf with his political buddies, and they discuss HOW stupid you were in getting caught getting a blow job?
Then later that night get together with more political friends, get drunk, try and get naked with the bar maid? If they are unlucky get into their County own vehicles and drive home like Chief Leech did?
Then the next morning come to work, sit on another Board of Chiefs, and you give an employee 10 days of for drunk driving, reassigned them to the jail and don’t promote them for the next 5 years, becasue their arrest made the papers because the CHP arrested you.
After that hearing, get into a helicopter or plane and fly up to Sacramento for more meetings with political friends and again go out to dinner and go have sex all night and get drunk.
Fly back to the office, find out some of your higher ranking employees are involved in some felony crimes and spend the day trying to figure out how to get yourself and some of them out of the whole mess.
And of course some people who know about all this, it starts leaking out, certain employees see it, hear about it over the course of years and they too try their luck at all the above. Helicopters and planes excluded.
So by now after several years, you the manager have layed more than a few dozens woman, been drunk more times than you can remember, and have fired or disciplined dozens of employees for the same thing.
And you always lead the public to believe you don’t tolerate this conduct and tell those you are asking campaign contributions from, you have fired 25 employees in the last couple years for such contact. OR is it the Board of Supervisors you tell that too?
Someone with the progressive management skills tell me how this is no big deal in the big scheme of running an organization?
Guess one could say it is fair if you didn’t fire anyone else for the samething you have been doing for years.
I met Mr Schrader, at a recent event, he is very personable, well spoken, and has good comand presence. we spoke about his campaign and how he can help the SBSD.
I asked about why he was still a Deputy after 20+ plus years of service, and his answer more than satisfied my curiosity.
For those that are not aware; there are speacial job opertunities withing law enforcment agencies that dont requier advancment in rank. These jobs come with extra pay, flexiable hours, and other perks such as county cars, and positive public interactions.
Mr Schrader is more than approachable, please don’t hesitate to contact him with your concerns or questions.
Just Saying
Semmelweiss,
Sheriffs don’t write the laws, they are supposed to enforce them.
If you don’t like a law, talk to your Assembly person.
Just Saying
Sorry Semmelweiss, keeping someone in office who has proven they are evil, is just absurd.
YOU have no idea how many cops could care less if you want to smoke weed for whatever purpose.
I like the law. I’d like officials who obey it, and publicly say so. I guess that’s too much to ask.
How many of our elected officials look GREAT on paper?! This country was founded on being guided & run by the people and for the people. Why? Because experience and common sense doesn’t come from a paper or a title. Remember?? Let’s try it this again and vote for the regular guy. Do some research on Schrader. Then vote for him on June 8.
PS – Schrader requested a debate with the incument and other candidate. They have agreed and date & time are TBA. Keep tabs on Sheriffpaul.net.
What ACU is saying is totally correct. It just so happens that I was going to write about this same issue covering the same things that he has done last night but never got around to it.
For all of you young deputies out there take a look at what is happening and pay attention. If you do not vote for change and remain on a promotional list for several years with nothing happening please do not cry about it as the old timers have done. You have the opportunity right now to do something about it. In the past no one would run against the appointed Sheriff so you had to take what you had.
Why do you think a detective on probation gets convicted of a crime and does not lose his current rank? Because he is on the fast track thats why. Why does a Sgt gets caught DUI in his county car, does not get arrested, and gets promoted to Lt the following year? You guessed it, fast track. Why do you think a Sgt is involved in a domestic violence incident, does not get arrested, no report and gets promoted to Chief? Yep fast track.
Now with the things the way they currently are that Chief will be the Sheriff, the Lt and Detective will be Chiefs and you may find yourself in front of them as they are issuing you days off for not taking a domestic violence report on a call you took because in your opinion it did not meet the requirements of a crime.
And oh yea call SEBA to represent you and have your union Rep tell you, “Well they can do what they want, it’s their department”.
Have you been in the jail system waiting your turn to get out but someone with a relative on the department gets out before you. You ask what difference this makes? Well who are they going to promote first you with less street time or the other deputy with more street time.
The Sheriff’s Department currently have Detective’s and Sgt’s in there positions that have never written a search warrant. They have Detectives that have gotten promoted and only worked one assignment as a detective and gets promoted to Lt and now is going to tell you their vast knowledge on how you should work a case or how a case should have been worked.
Over the years many individuals have not been promoted with great experience and a vast amount of knowledge only because of something that may have happened in the past or because they worked for some Captain or Chief and had a difference of opinion with them at one time or another.
You have all worked with someone that is so lazy you are surprised that they even had the energy to get out of bed that day. Or the last guy to back you because he may get hurt while you are in a fight. Or the guy that goes to take a report and stay’s at the location until the entire report is completed.
But the brass loves him/her. They are funny and fun to be around. They will do anything that they are told from taking a report from one of the Captains friends when a crime has not been committed to making sure that they have a beer with them after work. And the next thing you know they are your supervisor.
I have been told that there is a detective on the department that has never written a search warrant. When asked to do so they admitted that they had no knowledge of what it took to write a search warrant. Now that may not be to bad but the problem with this person is they were a trainer at the acadamy. Now you would think that this person might show the desire to attend some of the classes offered to the new troops they are training at the acadamy won’t you. But no why should they? They have made it this far without this knowledge why will they need it for the next step.
As far as your dues at SEBA goes. Well how do you give $25,000.00 to a person running for sheriff and then go tell him that what he is doing to employee “A” or “B” is not corrent or wrong. SEBA should remain neutral in an election of this type. No money should be given to any canidate.
So please take note and do the right thing.
Please post when and were the debate will be held.
I would like to thank everyone for the support.
I now have campaign coordinators in most cities in San Bernardino County. We have volunteers calling, door knocking and blogging toward voters. I have over 2000 request for signs and we keep running out.
I want to tell the Sheriff’s employee’s that call and email me, keep it up, help is on the way. I think the word has hit the Department hard. Originally I had about 50 staff members from the Department call or email to say how discussed-ed they are with the way the executive staff behave and the way they do not tell the public anything about corruption in the Department. A captain called me and said he is sick of the good old boy system! I now have over 150 members that have called or emailed me. I have even had discussions with some folks who are on appointed committees of the Department. Some of the staff are now talking to the press or that is what I am being told.
Thanks to all my volunteers for the hard work and all the grass root money. I even have an attorney that has offered free legal help if I need it for election purposes.
Just to give everyone an update. We will meet every Saturday as a group separate from my other volunteers to door knock for voters( the location we will be going to will be placed on my blog at http://sheriffpaul.wordpress.com/.) I will update the blog every Friday. You can also check my calendar at sheriffpaul.net. We use a certified list of voters who have voted in the last 4 elections. I have folks doing this nearly all week long, so we do it one day a week. I also need people to help call people on these list. I have people now calling 4 to 5 days a week. I need people who can blog positive information about my campaign. We have 5 people doing this 7 days a week. I now have meetings or appearances nearly 4 to 5 nights a week and nearly all day on the weekends after door knocking. If you have an event you want me to come to, please let me know so we can schedule it.
Please email your information or questions to sheriffpaul@charter.net. Questions that you need to talk with me about call 909-732-6964.
Lets Roll
