iePolitics: Now We Know Why Barb Is Bald

Residents described the smell as “a pasture ripe with manure and mildew rising and spreading for miles around,” according to Stanton.

During one March 2004 visit to the area, she noticed something odd.

“There was no vegetation growing anywhere near the Adelanto facility—it was strange like a dead zone. I was creeped out and not comfortable near the plant,” she recalls.

We have been trying to figure it out for some time.  What the heck caused Barb to go bald?

We know vegetation doesn’t grow around fertilizer.  That’s a proven fact.  Just ask Barb.

And now we find out she had nothing better to do than hang around piles of shit.  Using the logic we hear Barb express so often, this must be the answer.  Perhaps Barb some Rogaine will counteract all those fumes you sniffed.

iePolitics: A Milestone

The post below represents iePolitics’ 1000th post since we changed formats with the decision to use mostly original material earlier this year. You have participated by making 4830 comments on those posts.

I’m a big believer that all things happen for a reason.  When Jim and I split off into two separate blogs, many wondered if the local readership could and would support both.  But instead of dividing readership, we have increased it exponentially.   We both receive more hits than some local newspapers.

InlandPolitics: Lack of investigative reporting reflected in local news stories

One thing is obvious these days. Investigative reporting by local newspapers is long gone.

More and more local newspaper reporters are becoming increasingly pliable to ignoring facts when it suits them. A prime example today is a one-sided story in the Barstow Desert Dispatch related to action by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors on the Nursery Products LLC – Hawes Composting Facility near Hinkley.

iePolitics: The Yucca Mesa Municipal Advisory Committee

As I learned with the Havasu Lake Municipal Advisory Council, MACs are important to these small communities.   And the one in Yucca Mesa is mad as heck at San Bernardino County Third District Supervisor Neil Derry and wants to vote him out of office for not maintaining the MAC.  Here is their website:  www.stopyuccamesaannexation.org

iePolitics: Environmentalists and the Environment – Part Three

It is said that the love of money is the root of all evil and human behavior certainly suggests that the adoration of the almighty greenback brings about the demise of many a man.  When we come across a panhandler on the street, some of us will throw change his way while others will look in the opposite direction, assuming he is trying to get something for nothing.

The same goes for charities and non-profits.  Some of us take the good works these organizations tout at face value while others look at all who ask for money with skepticism.  And casting a critical and inquisitive eye towards non-profits is a wise decision.

The ongoing saga involving San Bernardino County supervisor Paul Biane and his apparently former chief of staff Matt Brown just keeps getting better and better.

During our last update we informed you that Brown was reportedly balking at taking a position in the Auditor-Controller-Treasurer-Tax Collector’s office.

Sources at the time were telling InlandPolitics.com Brown wanted his legal bills paid for by the county.

InlandPolitics: Brown not laughing any longer

www.inlandpolitics.com

A little less than two weeks ago California Attorney General and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown was poking at Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman over the millions she had spent to date, and the fact he still had a 5 point lead in a recent poll.

Remember the invite Meg to tea comment?

Then came last Wednesday. The widely respected Field Poll had Whitman and Brown in a statistical tie. Brown stopped laughing.

So much for that lead. A lead Brown will likely never see again.

iePolitics: More selective prosecution?

We are getting very close to the statute of limitations running on the defendants in the POST scandal and no charges have been filed by San Bernardino County District Attorney Mike Ramos.  We are getting very close to the statute of limitations running on former San Bernardino County Supervisor Dennis Hansberger and staff for the destruction of official records when he left office and no charges have been filed by San Bernardino County District Attorney Mike Ramos.  We are perhaps not as close to the statute of limitations running on Grand Terrace City Councilwoman Bertha Bea Cortes. but still after the complaint being in the hands of San Bernardino County District Attorney Mike Ramos for many months, no charges have been filed.

iePolitics: Hansberger/Ramos to challenge Derry?

It seems the behind-the-scenes chatter is picking up regarding at least one challenger for San Bernardino Third District Supervisor incumbent Neil Derry.  James Ramos, tribal chairman of the San Manuel Band of Serrano Mission Indians, is said to be considering seriously a run for the seat that includes parts of San Bernardino, and the cities/communities of Redlands, Yucaipa,  Big Bear, Highland, Lake Arrowhead and Yucca Valley.

iePolitics: Corruption on the Fifth Floor and Elsewhere – Everyone Wants to Blame the Rich Guy

It doesn’t seem to matter if we are discussing Jeff Burum, the Lewis Family, or any other of a number of successful, wealthy businessmen in our community, they are all “corrupt.”  I don’t mean that they are really, truly corrupt, but they are “corrupt” in the minds of the less successful.  The common thought seems to be that if one has money, then one has no integrity.  Our community doesn’t allow for making an “honest” hundred million or so.  Hard work, sacrifice, intellect, college education, and just plain good old-fashioned luck can all be damned.  If one is successful, then one must be a crook.

I’m sure there is a term for this mentality, and with our current corruption scandal, that mentality has become very frustrating.  Otherwise intelligent people seem to be more interested in finding blame than finding truth.  The fact that so many have bought into Batman and Robin’s conspiracy theory is proof that logic and critical thinking have given way to hysteria and enjoyment in the fact that someone with power may be taken out, not for wrongdoing, but because they have power and wealth.  I suppose the weak hope to bask in the demise of the powerful.

iePolitics: Attention Public Defender Readers

I received the package today and I am going to scan in and post some of the pages.  I think it is important for the public and/or county employees to see a perfect example of why Ruth Stringer should have been fired long ago for incompetence and using her office for political witch hunts.  She has an obligation to the taxpayers even if means telling another attorney, i.e., Doreen and Lauri, “NO!”

It would help though if someone would email me a synopsis of the litigation so readers can understand all that transpired.

iePolitics: Holy Cow Robin! Can I be your Batman?

Moonbeam and Robin

Batman: “Haven’t you noticed how we always escape the vicious ensnarements of our enemies?”
Robin: “Yeah, because we’re smarter than they are!”
Batman: “I like to think it’s because our hearts are pure.”

Riddle me this readers:  What were they thinking?

“What was who thinking?” you say.  Our men in tights . . . our caped crusaders . . . our dynamic crime fighting duo . . . Moonbeam and Mikey . . . oops, I mean Batman and Robin.

That’s right!  Moonbeam had been wandering aimlessly along in the fog for far too long until he ran right smack dab into the “crime of the century.”  Robin had been fighting corruption in San Bernardino County by his lonesome since his Batman retired (Hoops isn’t into wearing tights and a cape) so he eagerly welcomed his new “partner”—Hackleman’s term, not mine, and we won’t go any further with that visual—and our dynamic duo was united.  (See photo on office wall.)

iePolitics: Arrowhead Credit Union

I promised this post a couple of weeks ago, but my time has been taken up with other matters.  Besides, I noted a lot of the information was written by others on the various newspaper blogs.  I was actually happy to see that I am not the only one to remember the problems at Arrowhead Credit Union (ACU).

It’s almost hard to know where to start.  I joined as a member in 1982 and loved the credit union until I became Marie  Alonzo’s secretary in 1993.  Marie, of course, is the first and biggest problem with ACU.

iePolitics: The Corruption Scandal – Another Political Angle

David Ellis is the founder of the Dave Ellis Group and Delta Partners, LLC, a full-service government relations and public affairs firm located in Orange County, California.  He is San Bernardino County District Attorney Mike Ramos’ campaign consultant and political advisor.

Not long after Sam Clauder’s arrest on child porn charges, Ellis was at an event where he was overheard saying, “I think we have Clauder right where we want him,” referring to Clauder’s arrest and incarceration.  Remember, Sam Clauder was a Democratic operative and vocal opponent of Mike Ramos and other San Bernardino County Republicans.

Exactly why would a campaign consultant be interested in whom his client prosecutes?  For that matter, why would a district attorney be discussing a current case with his campaign consultant?

iePolitics: The Lewis Death

I’ve received a number of private contacts asking that we stay on this story and we have no intention of letting it drop until the truth comes out.  And we hope that will be sooner rather than later so that David can rest in peace.

iePolitics: ARMC: Thank You Supervisor Derry

Back on June 21 I wrote this article about ARMC:  Why things will never change.  I’m happy to say that after over a year of telling high-level officials about what was going on there, the Third District stepped up to the plate, got County Administrative Officer Greg Devereaux involved, and had one aspect of that situation investigated and resolved.

My understanding is that is they only found a little over $100,000 in billings that could not be collected, but part of that was due to the fact that I had destroyed millions of dollars worth of old billings that were never worked.   At least at the time I left, there had been another person up there assigned to dig out all the work that was being hidden rather than billed.  At the same time, just before I left ARMC I wandered up there to check on the state of affairs only to find that the filing system I had created so that billings would not fall through the cracks had been decimated and thrown by the wayside.  They had returned to  two-foot high piles of billings stashed in every hiding place imaginable.  But all that really matters is all that revenue can be collected and maybe save a job or two.

iePolitics: I should have thought of this myself!

I heard back from the Feds on the TAD issue and I so totally should have thought of this.  EVERYONE whose name, social security number or address may be in the CIV system because you, a family member, someone living in your home, a second parent/former significant other, etc., has received cash aid, food stamps, Medi-Cal, IHSS, child care, foster care, or certain adoptions, any time in the past ten years needs to call the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing at 1-800-884-1684 and file a complaint.  They will set up an appointment for an investigative interview in San Bernardino for about two months from now—that’s how backed up they are.  This is a critical step in the process of suing the county. It must be completed and must be done timely.

In the aftermath of the announcement that District Attorney Mike Ramos’ team failed miserably to prove that Rex Gutierrez participated in a conspiracy or lied on his time card, there was one little-noticed comment that stood out.Assistant District Attorney Jim Hackleman, Mike Ramos’ appointed hatchet man, accidentally confirmed a suspicion many San Bernardino County residents had suspected for many months. Hackleman was asked by the media if the DA’s Office would seek a re-trial of their failed and costly conspiracy case and his comments were very telling. Hackleman proved just who was driving this wild political investigation when he said, “We’re going to sit down with our partners in the Attorney General’s office and will thoroughly review and refine our case with them.”

iePolitics: More Sheriff’s Stuff

Here is an email I received today:

I know you have your hands full with many stories, but I just thought of something that was so “common” within the Sheriff’s Department that it just occurred that it was newsworthy & further shows the corruption & nepotism within the department…when Cindy Beavers was married to Randy Beavers, he made it clear to more than one person that he could “get” a copy of the promotional exams for anyone who was one of his “buddies”.  The promotional process usually consists of 50% station eval & 50% testing grade/group.  With a testing grade/group of “group 1″ & a good station eval then a promotion was almost inevitable.  Randy never made it a secret (especially in his drunken state – which was 99% of the time he was off-duty & probably most of the time he was on-duty) that he could get a copy of the exam or at least the very questions asked on the test that would help people do well on the test and therefore get promoted.  Ask around & you’ll find that this has happened many times – not just with Randy.  I guess it’s a good thing when your wife is having an affair with the Sheriff.

Any clarification from anyone?

Bruce McMahon: We Either Rise Together or Fall Apart

To my fellow employees:

As you all know, much has been said over the last week regarding Doreen Boxer and Lauri Ferguson.  These statements, however, have just been reiterations of what most, if not all of us have felt about the public defender administration.  My letter that iepolitics.com had graciously printed is just an amalgamation of fears and concerns that have been stated in hushed tones in every break room, office, and lunch table in every corner of our county.  These statements have to do with the injustice, the deceit and fear that have been doled out on a daily basis by both Ms. Boxer and Ms. Ferguson and their so called “administration.”

We have seen it all:  the termination of phenomenal attorneys, investigators, and staff; the vindictive reassignments or transfers of our colleagues; false statements by Ms. Boxer to give up our negotiated pay increases to save our colleague’s jobs, only to see them fired and watch as new Deputy Public Defender I positions open up; ridiculous office polices designed to damage our morale or frustrate our unions; and the most disturbing of all, a general lack of regard for the employees of an administration who claims its mission is to defend the rights of others!

While Rancho Cucamonga City Councilman and former San Bernardino County Assessor’s Office Inter-Governmental Affairs Officer Rex Gutierrez was allegedly doing city work on county time and county work on city time, what was our favorite San Bernardino County District Attorney Mike Ramos doing?

Well he had his own version of “inter-governmental affairs” on his mind. Yep, that’s right. He was busy with affairs for sure. You know the kind—fornication, copulation, making whoopee—not with the wife he tells these women he is divorcing, but with his subordinates.

iePolitics: ARMC: Another Blatant Violation

In writing this series about corruption at San Bernardino County’s only county-operated hospital, Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC), there was one thing I could never understand about the situation and that is why does ARMC contract out over $28 million in services every other year but is not required to go through the RFP process even though many of these contracts are for a million dollars or more, well above the statutory limit for no-bid contracts.  So I asked an expert and here is his answer:

There are two ways for a county hospital to contract for professional services.  The one that most academic-oriented hospitals such as ARMC uses is as follows: Continue reading

iePolitics: Havasu Lake

A NIGHTNARE STRAIGHT FROM HELL!!!

Dear Sharon

The Citizens of Havasu Lake Ca. are in for a rough ride, the issuance of an even further enabling Trust Patent to the nearby Chemehuevi Indian Reservation can only indicate that we are in for more of the same nightmare that we have suffered through for the last thirty six years, only worse!

Past history is always the best indicator of future events and our history here at Havasu Lake is both extremely ugly and very well documented. The genesis of all of our grief being the totalitarian mindset of a small cadre that has taken control of the Tribal Govt. The views of this clique are extreme to say the least and can best be described as the devaluation of the lives and interests of Non-Indians and Non-voting Tribal Members.

The link in this first one is quite disturbing.  It hasn’t been updated in a very long time.  Could someone please tell us the current status?

Hello,
Here’s some info on the “Retired” Supervising Investigator from the Public Defender Randy Bliss that is now employed back at the Public defender as a contract employee with the same duties. He is also a “retired” employee from San Bernardino Police Dept. Here is information provided by San Bernardino defense attorney Don Jordan about what Randy Bliss did at San Bernardino Police. Hope this helps in your efforts against the current administration at the PD. Bliss and Ferguson are very close friends. Bliss works directly for Chief Investigator Martin Dante: http://www.silvercloud.net/freejimmy/

iePolitics: Smoke and Mirrors on the Fifth Floor – Part 2

Here is an email I received this morning:

Sharon:

Greg’s reorg is not about money. It’s a power shift. Think about the personnel the Supervisors are giving up.

1st: Devereaux is after O’Toole
2nd: Brown took himself out
4th: Ovitt gave up Kirk
5th: Devereaux is taking Page

Devereaux isn’t going after anyone in the 3rd, because Derry doesn’t have anyone who can help Derry match wits with Devereaux.

And the email is absolutely correct and one of the biggest points we plan to make with this series.   There is a shifting of  power taking place on the Fifth Floor.

iePolitics: Discontent in the Public Defender’s Office – Revised

Editor’s Note: The Sun refused to publish this letter from a deputy public defender, which is a typical Frank Pine decision. The letter was signed and anonymity was not requested. San Bernardino Sun

Dear Editor:

I have been a Deputy Public Defender with the County of San Bernardino for approximately nine years.  In 2006, while disappointed that Interim Public Defender Gerald Farber was not awarded the position, I viewed the hiring of Doreen Boxer with a mix of excited anticipation and the belief that our office and therefore, our clients, would be in good hands under Ms. Boxer’s administration.  At first, Ms. Boxer exceeded expectations.

When she began, she implemented a training program for new attorneys, made sure that we had proper resource materials for competent representation of our clients and instilled pride and a sincere belief that we were truly fighting for the rights of our indigent clients.  Morale was at an all time high.

Now that we are in mid 2010, I cannot honestly say that I feel the same way of our Public Defender Administration.  Morale of our attorney and investigations units have bottomed out under the leadership of Ms. Boxer and her assistant, Lauri Ferguson.  Ms. Boxer and Ms. Ferguson would like to have us believe that our morale problem stems from a bad economy and thus, a much stricter county budget.  Nothing could be farther than the truth. InlandPolitics: More women come forward against S.B. County District Attorney

Ramos

www.inlandpolitics,com

InlandPolitics.com has learned that five more women have come forward against San Bernardino County District Attorney Michael Ramos.

Additional details will be forthcoming during the next 72 hours.

Matt Munson: Caught In Another Budget Bind

Senator Dutton has written yet another eloquent column about why we should pass Republican Party budget solutions, but Democratic Party legislators want to do it their way no matter how many more Californians will become unemployed or how massive the state’s budget problems will become in future years.

Even though Republicans may have the winning issues on the state budget and law and order, our state is so gerrymandered where the Democratic Party will likely be able to pass their state budgets in a veto-resistant manner after the next two elections. The Democratic Party has State Senate District 12 and 15 in the cross hairs so they can be ready to pass budgets without Republican Party influence.

Unfortunately we will have to see California collapse before voters ever do consider the Republican Party as a viable choice, but even so there are many demographic groups who would rather vote for a dog instead of a Republican. Republicans are going to have to build a relationship with these demographic groups that Republicans used as wedge issues in order to adapt to the demographics of our state today. Continue reading
