iePolitics: Devore dog of the day

Now this is a dog that if I had the room, I would adopt myself.  She is a Lab/Shepherd mix, which is to me one of the best mixes.  Mine lived to be 15 years old and was one of the smartest dogs ever.  Got him when he was four weeks old because his mama couldn’t care for the whole litter.  I used to ride him around the desert on the motorcycle until he was two months old and was too big to fit in my lap.  He would NOT be left home so he learned to run very fast and could easily chase down a jack rabbit.  I’ve seen chase a rabbit from our house to the Apple Valley Airport, which was several miles away.  And he would eventually catch it.  All the years of chasing us on dirt bikes gave him tremendous strength and stamina.  He could also jump from our back wall onto our roof.  We had more strangers stop by our house to tell us there was a big black dog on our roof!  And ya better not have taken out a rifle and expect him to stay home.  Oh did he love to go on hunting trips with my brother and his friends.

Anyway, here is her information:

ID#A497730

I am a female, black Labrador Retriever and German Shepherd Dog.

My age is unknown.

I have been at the shelter since Jul 05, 2011.

The shelter can be contacted at (909) 887-8055.  There are 70 dogs there right now that will all be dead in a few days if no one adopts them.

iePolitics: An email from a reader

I received this yesterday:

Hi, I am looking to adopt a dog and I keep seeing Devore Animal Shelter show up.  I am a little confused as to what exactly is going on, but I have seen a lot of negative comments about the shelter.  I wouldn’t want to be handing over money to a business hurting animals, but I also don’t want to see the animals suffering.  I figured gaining some information from someone who had a better idea about the situation was a good place to start.  Any information would be appreciated.

I had to respond from my cell phone so the response was brief and without much punctuation: Continue reading

iePolitics: Volunteers needed

Tomorrow another group of volunteers will be speaking before the Board of Supervisors during the public comments section.  The topic will be the Devore Shelter.  We would appreciate any volunteers who would be willing to go as moral support and/or speak.  The group plans to make its presence felt at the Board of Supervisors every meeting until the BOS acts.

If you can be there please let us know.

Thank you to those who helped me figure out how to get my photos off of Flickr.  It worked.  Above is the last snake I caught from a better time in my life.

Also, thank you to those who sent donations.  I told you NO but you guys don’t listen!!  It’s appreciated.  However, my resolve stands as far as making this blog self-sufficient and moving it off shore.  I may have an Examiner article up tonight or the first one may go up tomorrow night.  I will provide all the instructions then.

iePolitics: If ever someone has something to hide . . .

It is Brian Cronin.  That became even more obvious with his comments to Joe Nelson after last week’s board meeting.  None of us are going to let this drop.  I sent the following CPRA requests to David Wert this afternoon.  I can’t wait to read the responses David is forced to send to me.

Hi David,

I am requesting the following information under the California Public Records Act:

iePolitics: Devore is not the only one

I was thinking about the complaints about Devore that they put down dogs for stupid reasons.  Devore is not the only hell hole in San Bernardino County.  Apple Valley’s Zuni shelter is the other.

Several years ago I had been visiting Zuni everyday to help a friend look for her lost cat.  There was this cute little Boxer girl there I saw several days in a row.  I couldn’t get her out of my mind.

iePolitics: The blog

I almost have my stories caught up.  I’m taking the next few days off from the blog.  Unless I make it to the library, there won’t be anything new until Monday or Tuesday.

So enjoy Independence Day.  Remember those who fought for our freedom and those who founded this great country so that we could have the freedom to blog and say what we want about our elected and appointed leaders. Continue reading

SBSun: Animal rights activists seek shelter changes

Joe Nelson, Staff Writer

Posted: 06/28/2011 07:54:26 PM PDT

Animal rights activists denounced San Bernardino County’s central animal shelter in Devore at Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting, pleading with the board to allow volunteers to assist at the shelter to improve conditions there. They complained of high euthanasia rates, cramped and uncomfortable quarters and a lack of capacity at the shelter, which opened in the 1980s with about 50 kennels and has since expanded to about 90.

Still, the activists argued that that is a subpar capacity level for the number of stray dogs and cats collected by county animal control officers, most of which are euthanized.

“I had no idea that 60 to 80 percent of animals are being euthanized at our public shelter,” said Janet McAfee of Upland.

iePolitics: Dogs to be sic’d on BOS

Dog lovers that is.  A coalition of rescues and animal lovers are expected tomorrow at the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors meeting to express their concerns over the conditions at the Devore Shelter, but more importantly, the attitudes of its employees.  We expect coalition members to be far more gracious and polite than the employees are at the shelter to the poor critters in their care.  More to come later tonight.

iePolitics: Devore dogs of the day

I haven’t had enough internet access for several days to get a dog posted.  Today it was very hard to pick one.  The are a ton of Chihuahuas, Shih Tzus, Poodles, and others on the list of 47 who will be dead very soon.  But this young lady did really stand out from the others:

She is beautiful.  ID#A495430

I am a female, sable and tan Australian Shepherd mix.  The shelter staff think I am about 1 year old. I have been at the shelter since Jun 13, 2011.

This one made me sick.  How can someone let their dog get in this shape and then dump it at 12 years of age.  I can say my Lapso lived to be 17, so this girl may have some good years ahead of her if someone can look beyond the mats.  There is also a 6-year-old male that has been cleaned up.

ID#A495468

I am a female, black Lhasa Apso.  The shelter staff think I am about 12 years old.  I have been at the shelter since Jun 14, 2011.

These and 45 other dogs are up for adoption and have only hours left.  The shelter can be reached at (909) 887-8055.  There are also a couple of nice looking quarter horses there up for adoption.

iePolitics: Devore dogs of the day

Today I am including other species too.  The shelter can be reached at (909) 887-8055.

ID#A492982  I am a female, brown Horse.  My age is unknown.  I have been at the shelter since May 04, 2011.

iePolitics: Another Animal KILLED at Devore with a rescue and a home to go to!!!

by No Kill So. California on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at 6:10pm

This is not the first or even the 20th time an animal has been KILLED when a rescue was there. Once again no one put the hold on even after repeated requests. No one in the front told them rescue would be there when they opened. Devore has complete disregard for the Hayden Law and the lives and welfare of the animals entrusted to them by us.

Piglet...she is full of life, vibrant, lovable and a little butt wiggler…Her eyes look almost human with their pale green blue hues as they beg and plead for you to pet her.

We did not save Piglet today or many others that they KILLED instead of allowing rescue to get them. How much longer are we going to stand by afraid to speak out? How many more animals must needlessly be KILLED before we say it is enough? This is NOT their shelter, it is YOUR shelter.

iePolitics: Some interesting turn of events

I always say I know when I hit a nerve with something I post and that has been the case with the information about the Devore Shelter.  I have been cross-posting the “Dog of the Day” articles on other sites and they are being removed.  I was talking to someone else who is also involved and they have experienced the same thing.  What is most interesting about that though is that the other person posts from a number of shelters and only the Devore ads are being removed.  And now I find out this is wide-spread.  So the question begs to be asked, Why would someone not want the Devore dogs to find homes rather than being killed?

iePolitics: Blog content

I thought I would address the comments made recently about the Devore Dogs of the Day posts.  There are a number of reasons why those posts are there.

First and foremost, the conditions, and especially the attitudes, at the Devore shelter are deplorable and these dogs need help.  There is also a very political side to this issue that I will address as time goes on.

Second, these posts bring in lots of added readers.  Today’s post was the third highest rated post on the blog for the day.

Those who have been with me for almost five years from the coffeerocket and crittercollectibles days have read some of this before.  The blog’s main purpose is to make me happy.  I mean that quite literally. Remember Dean Arabatzis telling me that my blog creates a “hostile work environment for county administrators”?  That brings me joy.  There are a lot of frustrated county employees and citizens alike that are very much enjoying the demise of county officials.

The issues of corruption are no different at the Devore shelter than at the Sheriff’s Department, TAD, the District Attorney’s office, Trans/Flood, DCS, etc.  All involve county employees/officials who either/or 1. Are abusing their power; 2. Are misusing county monies and/or property; 3. Are gaining something financial from their position.  Corruption is corruption whether it is using the planning process to eliminate competition of a campaign donor, harassing a neighbor by using DCS or code enforcement, accepting a payoff to lower property taxes, getting paid for classes one doesn’t take, or a host of other offenses used by county staffers and officials to financially enrich oneself or to satisfy the increasing need to feel powerful.  Many don’t realize this but part of the Colonies dispute actually goes all the way back to Supervisor Jon Mikels stomping his feet and deciding to show ‘em who’s boss.

I have said many times on the blog that I can tell when I strike a nerve.  A nerve has been struck with Animal Control—a very big nerve.  I’m not sure what they are hiding that we don’t already know about but I strongly suspect it is criminal in nature.  The “dog of the day” posts bring in readers from around the country and Canada—yes even Canadian rescuers are taking Devore dogs.  It is important we keep that going and expose every dirty little secret in that place.

iePolitics: Found dog

I know this is a very long shot, but tonight I found a dog wandering on Ranchero by the Chevron station in Hesperia.  Because of the way the road is designed there, he travelled a good half mile before I could get turned around and catch up with him.  Once he got to that intersection, he seem to have become a bit disoriented.

He is wearing an unusual collar but no tags.  I already stopped by the vet and had him scanned for microchips and there were none.  He is very large and cream color.  Other than that, if anyone might know who is missing him, they can contact me at iepolitics2010@gmail.com and identify.

The all night E-vet will know how to get a hold of me and Hesperia Animal Control will be notified tomorrow.  I will not turn him over to animal control so he is safe.

On a side note, someone else was also trying to get him out of traffic and I believe that was Scott Ryan.  That was nice to see Scott!

From Facebook . . .

Dear Community and Doug Smith,

The recent aborting of pups and spaying mother, when they had already been claimed by a rescue. What kind of disconnect from compassion must you have, to do something so heartless and absurd. This kind of ‘ethically and spiritually void behavior, has no place near living beings, lest governing the lives of those so revered by the community they serve.

In the name of that black Lab and her slain pups, apathy will be rooted out of these shelter walls. The Board of Supervisors is the way to go. There is enough evidence, past the cosmetic upgrades and song and dance of Doug, sorry buddy, I gave you an option. The black lab and I connected, I had you get her a blanket, then you were going to kill her and then had her pups aborted? Are you on crack?

How do you let your faithful companion of many years end up on death row? His name is Speedy and he is listed as a Great Pyrenees mix.  His ID#A492646.  He has been there since May 17, 2011, so he has little time left.

Speedy

Look at these ears!  How can you resist.  The poor guy has no name. He is thought to be about a year old.  His ID#A492651.  He has been there since May 17, 2011 also, so he has little time left.

I totally fell in love with this guy as soon as I saw his photo.  He is so unusual looking. He is a Chi/Pom mix and thought to be 2.5 years old.  His ID#A492227.  He has been there since May 11, 2011 and will die very soon if not rescued.

These and many more beautiful animals can be found at http://www.sbcounty.gov/acc/frameset_adoptable.html You can contact the shelter at (909) 887-8055.

iePolitics: Update from Devore

Thank you for offering to get in touch with the San Bernardino people.  I’m not really sure where to go from here— I’m taking off my white gloves now…my concerns:

THEY HAVE REFUSED TO HAVE VOLUNTEERS OF ANY KIND AT THE SHELTER, choosing instead to have the court ordered, work release people.

THEY HAVE REFUSED AN OFFER A NEW CAMERA and a professional photographer to come and give them lessons on how to take decent photos.

THEY ARE DOING NOTHING TO REUNITE ANIMALS TO THEIR PROPER OWNERS, There are many cases of dogs that are killed simply because owners don’t have the $$$. A dog was killed this week AFTER a volunteer/rescued offered to pay the fee.

iePolitics: Devore

Wires got crossed, etc., so we haven’t had a dog of the day all week.  We will resume tomorrow or Monday.  In the meantime I asked Christine to provide an update regarding her meeting with the shelter manager.  Here is what she had to say:

Sharon, Hi!!

Thank you for following up with me.

We started this journey a week ago, and it’s been exciting. I’ve met with the Shelter Director, we now have a website, Twitter and a group of volunteers, almost 400 facebook fans.  I’m very jazzed.

As far as the meeting with Doug Smith.  My general impression is that he seems to be very proud of the changes he’s made over the last year, and he should be!  The shelter is in good repair, there is music playing, the pens are clean.

However, I think there seems to be  a “forest for the trees issue”. A huge disconnect, while all that seems nice in the shelter…. at the end of the day, the dogs and cats are being killed at an alarming rate, and I mean alarming.

I can’t tell you want Devore’s rate of kill is but for the ENTIRE SAN BERNARDINO county in 2009, it was 82, 646 dogs and cats!!! That’s 142 animals A DAY.

These babies can also be pulled for spay/neuter ($80 for dogs, $50 for cats), and can be picked up the next day at the shelter vet in San Bernardino. Please contact the shelter at 909-887-8055, ext. 0 to put holds on any dogs or cats you can save, to keep them safe until our puller gets there.

iePolitics: Devore volunteers

From Miss Christine:

Would you mind putting the word out that we are looking for 75 volunteers in the Southern California area to volunteer at Devore?  It’s time for people to “Step up to the plate”…… We are looking for animal lovers who would be willing to just donate 4 hours a MONTH.  Either at the shelter at Devore or at an off site adoption event in San Bernardino on the weekends.

I have a very coveted appointment with the shelter director of Devore on Thursday at 1pm, Doug Smith.  I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to have my list of volunteers as part of my presentation.  We need volunteers to walk dogs, take decent photos, offer belly scratches, offer an element of transparency and community involvement for the shelter…

iePolitics: One more animal post for today and then back to politics

For the long-term, one thing that can help clean up Devore and the other county shelters is a mandatory spay and neuter ordinance.  Situations such as with Tilly, today’s featured dog, can be prevented.  There will always be irresponsible and lawless people, but most will abide by the law.  It will take time and education though.

Last year, Supervisor Neil Derry sponsored and got passed, with Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt’s help, a mandatory spay and neuter ordinance for pit bulls.  It was a good start, but I am among many who do not favor breed-specific legislation.  The law should be no respecter of breed.

WOOHOOO!!  I GOT MY MEETING WITH DOUG SMITH, the Director of Devore Shelter on this Thursday.  My  main goal is to have him agree to building a team of volunteers from Southern California area to get into this shelter and make a difference.

Here are two that have been rescued and are up for adoption:

Diego

Diego, special needs German Shepherd 60 lbs, 1-2 years old.  He is male and is neutered. Rescued from Devore within an hour of being euthanized, they said they had to kill him because he had diarrhea… turned out the be just worms, that we have taken care of..

Is super sweet, had never been on a leash before, now walks about 6 blocks a day.  He is great with cats but would need to be an only dog.  He does get really happy when he sees you and jumps up.  Working on that behavior.  He thinks he’s a small dog. Diego would love to have a yard to play in.  Needs someone who has experience training dogs and the time to work with him.  He has seen the behavior specialist at our local Humane Society here in San Diego.  He’s smart and wants to learn and please!
We can help to transport him to the right family.

iePolitics: Devore animal shelter

This was in the comments section today for those who missed it:

I am trying frantically to work with Director of Devore, Doug Smith to make some small changes within the shelter. I spent an hour on the phone with him several weeks ago. I don’t want to sound like a Pollyanna, but he seemed like he might be open to some small changes. I plan to meet with him in the next week or so. I would like to create a official community volunteer program at Devore Shelter. Are there ANY people out there who would be willing to spend an hour a week as a volunteer at Devore Shelter in San Bernardino County, California ? Or spend a few hours at an adoption event on a weekend? Currently, they only hold 2 adoption events a MONTH. We need to help them arrange and hold TWO adoption events a week, at a minimum. So we can move these animals into the community to new homes. Here in San Diego, where I volunteer…Gaines Shelter has an army of volunteers…. who really benefit the dogs and keep things on the up and up. If we can get people in there– to walk dogs, clean cages, help with adoptions, take decent photos and help at adoption events.. and keep on eye on things, it would go a long way to saving more dogs. Politics aside, the NUMBER ONE GOAL IS TO SAVE MORE DOGS FROM BEING KILLED AT DEVORE, if we can try, try, try try to work within the system we will have better results. Yes, I’m angry, upset and horrified at what’s happening at Devore. Since I heard about this place, I have personally found homes for about a dozen Devore dogs myself since February. I have two wonderful dogs in my home right now that were saved within hours of being killed by the staff. So…. If anyone has any positive ideas, suggestions, I would be happy to hear them and pass them along. I would also love to hear from people who would be interested in VOLUNTEERING a few hours a week. Thank you. I will be happy to share my contact info with anyone who replies to my post. Please be constructive, kind and respectful if you plan to email me— there is already so much negativity and horror around this situation already—–we don’t need to add to it.

For anyone interested in helping, send your information to iepolitics2010@gmail.com.

iePolitics: The kindness of friends and strangers

Lazerus, Rose, Rose and Job

For about a week now it seems I have run into exceptionally nice people.  I came across the photo above this morning.  It is a photo of the four Boxers I had for a number of years before my current pack.  Each one was a rescue with a story and at least one disability.  The three white ones came from the Zuni shelter and Job came from the Norco shelter.  My two Roses lived to be 13, which is old for Boxers.  My two boys died much younger due to their disabilities.  All died within a year or so of one another.

Lazarus has been on my mind since seeing the photos of Patrick.  Lazarus earned his name because he looked and smelled like a dog that had been dead for three days.  He rivaled Patrick for skinniness.  I didn’t think he would make it when I pulled him from the shelter, but he did.   He developed Degenerative Myelopathy some years later, which I have decided is worse than cancer in Boxers. But while these four were with me they traveled close to 250,000 miles.  Being on the road was their favorite place to be.

From a reader regarding the Devore Animal Shelter

I have to tell you about my experience today.  When we were pulling 2 boxers from there today we found out there is another that is scheduled to be put to sleep if no one took her today. We worked hard and within hours, we found a potential adopter and tried to get a rescue group to pull this dog from there.  We couldn’t get anyone to go there until tomorrow morning initially.  I called the shelter to see if they would extend the date by one day… or give us until 11 AM the next morning.  I explained to her there is an adopter, and that we would even pay them $100 to keep her until tomorrow.  They said no.  And since this dog was a rescue only because they thought she was dog aggressive, they would not release this dog to anyone.  By “dog aggressive” they said she had one incidence just when she was coming down with a kennel cough where she “went at” a dog she met.  She had shared a kennel with other dogs while she was there and she was fine according to some of the staff member I talked to over the phone.  The supervisor who refused to give us 1 hour — that was Kelly.  Her excuse is that there are other dogs awaiting kennel space.  Come on, couldn’t you spare 1 hour for a dog that had an adopter?  Apparently not.  We eventually found a rescue who went there and pulled her before closing.  But really… Kelly is cold.  Some of the staff were very nice, but Kelly doesn’t seem to value dog’s life.  Very sad.  She needs to find another job if she doesn’t care enough to spare 1 hour for a dog who has an adopter awaiting.
